Late freeze warning

I’m a bit concerned but not sure what I can do about it, actually. I’ve heard varying weather reports, from a low in the mid-30s to the lower 30s. With all of my annuals spread out all over the deck and yard, there really is no practical way to protect these guys if it does freeze. Plus, it’s windy, so spreading newspaper isn’t going to help. My poor flowers! They’re looking so pretty, darn it all. I heard on the news tonight that spraying them with water early in the morning after a hard frost might help save them, because it lets them unfreeze more slowly. I don’t quite understand how that’s supposed to work, but I think I’ll get up early to see if I can do some damage control.

Happy Memorial Day

Rainy, cloudy, foggy, cool. Hardly feels like Memorial Day at all. This is the start of summer? Frank wanted to put out the summer flag, but I’d rather wait until it really warms up. Valerie is home from school, and she and Marmalade spent much time outside, chasing chipmunks. Didn’t catch any, luckily! The fishies,

Miscellany

The fish are getting more comfortable, and chowing down on bugs. I hope they figure out what the food is soon though. I doubt they’re getting enough bugs to grow. I could see about 10 of them, more than yesterday’s 6, so maybe they’re all OK. I also planted an Italian honeysuckle that Lisa got

Our First Fishies!

Ok, so we’re lame, but we’ve never had a pond with fish in it before. We’ve gone out several times today just to watch them. We picked out twenty little fish at Lebanon Pet & Aquarium Center, about an hour north of us. They didn’t have the best selection, mostly pretty small fish, but they’ll

May flies

The month of May is flying by, and we are full of may flies as well. I am so bug bitten after spending the day out there yesterday, even in the bug suit, darnit. Have many bites on my fingers, which are all swollen up now. We saw some critters in the pond for the

Annual Migration

What a difference a month makes. We spent much of today hauling up the window boxes full of annuals (get it? annual migration?) from the basement to the back deck, which is now completely lined with flowers. Yay! They look so pretty, even if they are not quite cascading yet. But the temps for the

Mother’s Day 2001

It’s so beautiful in the garden these days. The temps are in the low 60s, and it’s been really sunny, big blue skies. We need rain in the worst way, and we’ve had a couple of passing thunderstorms in the last couple of days, but we need a real soaking. Princess is really enjoying the

Coming Along Nicely

It’s hard to do much outside right now, because the black flies are here in force. Some people call them may flies, and we usually have them for the whole month. They’re a little late this year, luckily, but I can’t stay outside for more than five minutes before they swarm around me. I’m a

Saving the trillium

We spent much of Sunday clearing for the future orchard, and found so many of these little guys. They are trillium, woods flowers, shade loving, endangered. I think they’re one of Frank’s most favorite flowers. I’m pretty fond of them myself. We have to move them, because they can’t tolerate the sun at all, and

Still Springing

What a difference just four days away makes! I had a trip down to DC and Philly, and when I left on Tuesday morning, the trees didn’t have leaves on them. Spring sprung while I was gone. It was such a beautiful day today. The temps in the 60s, so a little chilly. We had
