The Lawn Update

So, I’ve been meaning to take notes about the status of the lawn. Overall, I’m telling myself that it’s not too bad for the one year old it is. But really, it looks like it’s only one year old. Just before we cut it, it might be called lush looking, in a few spots. But

The Pond Update

The pond is going pretty well. Not bad for our first season, anyway. We seem to have a handle on the algae, anyway. We know we still need more plants, though. Up at the top, in the little mini-stream that runs into the pond, the mint that we planted on one side has shot out

Late Fall Blooms

I’m back from my first business trip after my surgery, which was exhausting, but I at least went outside and took a ton of pictures, did a little weeding. Lots of dead-heading. We still have quite a few late summer flowers, though the trees are starting to change. The burning bushes are at peak, I

Update on the window boxes

Putting modesty aside, I have to say my window boxes are an unqualified success. They just grab your eye when you drive up to the house. They’d be even better if only they weren’t pulling the deck railing down! But Frank has a plan, I think, for how to fix it, as soon as I

Burning Bush

Wow, fall isn’t officially here, but it’s officially here in our garden, if I go by the state of our burning bushes. I’ve never had these before, and they just look wonderful. No matter which angle you see them from, they pop right out at you, so I’m of course taking pictures of them from

Snakes in the garden

We are still mostly cocooning inside, though I did get outside a little bit to do a bit of weeding, today. I scared myself silly, though, sticking my hand near some rocks to weed, and pulling out the left-over skin from a snake. Yikes! Two minutes later, while I was jumping around, shaking my hand, the live snake slithered over my foot. Time to go inside! It’s about time to start transplanting things, too, though I’ll need Frank’s help with all the lifting and moving. I’m under very strict lifting limitations — no more than five pounds, and actually, I’m not even pushing it much because it’s painful. It’s hard to work out in the garden without lifting more than five pounds, you know?

Coming Back

Like the rest of the country, and really, much of the rest of the world, we’ve been huddled inside the house, mourning and watching the September 11th news coverage, not tending to the garden. Eventually, though, we just had to get outside. Frank went out and moved firewood and drove tractors last night, restless. I made it almost around the deck, deadheading madly and drastically. It’s been two weeks, really, since it’s had any attention, and I had to be pretty heavy handed with the pruning. But there’s some connection there that I felt as I was cutting the plants back pretty hardily — they will come back, stronger than ever. So we we all.

Just A Garden Walk Through

I did a walk-through only in the garden this evening, too weak today to do much more than that. It’s so hard to see the weeds and be forbidden via Doctor’s Order to pull them. Grrr. This water hyacinth that Carol brought for us on the day of our summer party is blooming so

Almost Fall

The garden right now is absolutely gorgeous. Fall is so close. My burning bushes are turning, and the trees around the house are just starting. Peak time for us for fall color is usually the first weekend in October, which I realized today is not really that far away. Fall feels like Mother Nature’s reward

Window box update

I managed to hobble around the window boxes trying to dead head the annuals for about 30 minutes today. Didn’t get very far, but I loved being out there. The boxes were dry, but I wasn’t strong enough to manage a hose as well, and Frank has 3,000 extra chores to do in the house
