Post-Tour Relaxing

What a relief it is to have the tour over and done with! It was very surprising to wake up this morning and not have a hundred things to do before the day was done. I think everything that we did out in the garden we would have done eventually, it’s just that with that date staring at us hard in the face, we had to do it all in a very abbreviated time frame. Today, we still wanted to be out there, but we didn’t do a single thing except enjoy it. It’s nice to relax and be surrounded with the results of all that hard work. I’m sure we’ll be back to actually gardening soon … but we even went by nurseries and didn’t want to stop and browse today. That’s amazing.

The Marlow Garden Tour

We were up very early this morning, getting ready for the Garden Tour, and I made a list of the stuff I thought had to be done. We even finished it all in time to go see the houses on the tour before ours, which was surprising. The pond was in fine form, with water

Final push before the tour

Can you tell we just fertilized the grass? No matter which direction Frank walks with the spreader, we see lines and missed spots. And he tries to be so careful! I’m spent much of this weekend out in the garden, trying to finalize stuff. I’ve got to be in DC next week, and the garden tour is next Saturday, so this is it, down to the wire. It’s all very pretty now, and I’m hoping it will still be okay in a week.

Update on the shady garden

The shade garden thingie I’ve got going in the front of the house is doing really well. Of course, like much of my garden, it’s in prime bloom now, and the garden tour is in a week, but what can I do. It’s pretty, perfect, right now. Columbine, foam flower, bleeding heart, lungwort, hosta, ribbon

Iris and Lilies

The water lilies are out, and the turtle from the other day did seem to lay eggs before she left. The trick is supposedly being the closest body of water that the new baby turtles find, and then they’ll hang out here for most of their life. We hope it works! The iris! I hardly

More Compost

We worked on building some more compost bins today. We’ve filled up the ones we have already, between the weeds, grass clippings and the coffee grounds we get from the coffee shop. An no, I do not want to stop getting those grounds. Our soil is so poor we need all the compost we can get. We are mixing it with shredded paper. We had to get a bigger one last weekend, because we, er, burned out the other one from too much use. This new one — much nicer. Eats cardboard boxes like cereal boxes without blinking. The lupines, water lilies and irises are all in full bloom right now. Driving up to the house, the garden just looks spectacular. Why isn’t the garden tour today?!

Teaching the climbers to climb

The chives right next to the pergola are in full bloom today. They’ve reseeded themselves and are very happy all over my garden, actually. Oops! Frank’s been playing with the camera, and I loved the shot of the chives with the bee so much it’s now the background wallpaper on my computer, plus I printed

More Iris

We were outside every possible minute today, trying to get things ready for the garden tour. I’m slowly feeling like I’m getting it under control, though. There are still lots of iris in bloom, with the Siberian ones just coming out. There are a bunch of these in the shallow parts of the pond’s waterfall,

Iris Season

The start of the irises in the garden just seemed to happen almost overnight. They got split too hard last year, and we only had a couple of blooms, and this year, we have tons of them. As much as we complain about the quality of the soil that the landscaper installed, time and composting
