Potato Harvest

We harvested our first potatoes today, and they are great. These are All Blue, and they are purple, my favorite color. Overall though, our potato attempt wasn’t that successful. We had planted them in one of the newly de-brushed areas in the future veggie patch, but there was no irrigation out there and it’s been a very dry summer. We tried to remember to water, but with our travel schedule, they sometimes went a week without water. That’s definitely shown up in the yield. We really like the way they taste and look, though, so we want to plan and execute is much better next year. They were a last minute thought this year, and now I’ve got months to think about how to do it better next year.

Labor day weekend

I spent last week in DC on business, and saw a flower that I’d never seen before during a walk through on one of the public gardens. It turns out it’s a passion fruit vine. From reading up on it, I find it hard to believe that DC is warm enough for it, but maybe

Post-Party Perfect Weather

It did indeed rain the entire time we had people over yesterday, so no one got to enjoy much of my garden. The gazebo was popular though, especially for the smokers. And the fragrance of all the blooms could still be detected even during the height of the rain storm. All that pounding water might

Party Time

We’re having a party tonight, and the garden feels like it’s ready to show itself off. Of course, with 30 people invited, we were hoping to be able to hold most of the party out on the deck and the garden, and it looks like it’s going to rain any second now, hard. The air

Gazebo time

We are spending almost every evening out in the gazebo at this point. When the sun starts to go down, it just calls our name. The screened in part was to keep away the bugs, but the mosquito magnet has been working so well that we can sit out there with the door propped open

Our Poor Pumpkin

I had this bright idea that we should plant pumpkins in the raised bed just outside the basement door. Years ago, in the old house (before the fire), we’d used this area as a compost thing. Nothing formal, we just tossed all of our veggie scraps there, trying to both fill up the raised bed

I love it when a plan comes together

Mom, this lady called and said you said she could come over and see the garden. Um, okay. I don’t remember that, except maybe back at the garden tour, but I certainly don’t remember a specific date. I’ve been gone all week, the garden needs to be watered, but sure, drop on by at 2.

Blooming Roses

Pretty, pretty roses all in bloom in the garden right now. The climbing white rose, Iceberg, that we got from Arena this year, is doing particularly well on the trellis underneath the gazebo. I just love this rose, so classic looking. The weather has been wonderful today, mid-70s, blue skies. The mosquito magnet is working

Bringing in Firewood

We worked hard outside today. I’m exhausted. We hauled wood from where the electric company had cut it, after Frank found out the other morning that one of our neighbors thought we didn’t want it, or something, and so had been taking the good stuff out. How very rude of him. Looking at these pictures, it’s a depressingly small pile we hauled in for how tired I am and how my back feels! We even bribed Valerie and Steve into working for a couple of hours with us. We need to do this about a dozen more times this year, I fear. And to think it all still has to be cut to length and stacked, then hauled in all winter. At least I managed to back the truck up behind the house — pretty tricky maneuvering, in reverse, but I impressed them all with my superior skills. Hard Work! We filled the truck up four times, I think.
