One of the species tulips is opened up today. It’s yellow and white, and so cute! These are the ones, unfortunately, that the mice at most of, though, so there aren’t that many plants. I think they are adorable, though. Maybe they’ll spread. It really barely looks like a tulip to me. The hyacinths are

I started outside this morning wanting to finish the bed directly in front of the front door. Though I’d done the majority of that bed, for some reason I stopped short of the most visible part, which was dumb, but I started there today, and what a huge difference it made! First off, I tackled

Our second Saturday in the garden. The top foot of the compost bin was thawed: I got two trailerloads of sifted compost out of it. The rest had to wait for more thawing. The 110 degree reading is the current pile, the 28 degree reading is the pile I’m trying to spread. Next I put

It was too cold to do more than just walk around in the garden last night, measuring out the future veggie patch and poking around. So instead, I came inside and browsed through some online water plants sites. I guess one of the lessons we’ve learned from all of the dead fish is that we

Hey, it’s not May yet. Snow is normal. So instead of working outside in the garden, I went back down in my basement where I could pretend there was no snow outside. I managed to hurt my shoulder pretty badly, though. I’d been emptying out some of the window boxes from last year into the

I’d been hoping to get another full day of spring clean up in this weekend, because I got so far on Saturday that I was all inspired. Instead, it rained on Sunday, all day long. Hard and cold rain, that I had absolutely no interest in getting out in. Oh well! So much for those

It’s Saturday, it’s warm, I’ve been gone all week, and I couldn’t wait to get out there in the garden and get going. I started this year with my least favorite bed. I figure if I start the spring clean up here, or perhaps I’ll keep it under control and stop avoiding it so much.

I’ve left the thermometer into the compost pile the last few days. After a few days of sitting right at 40, it finally started moving today. It was nice to see it almost get to 50. I stuck the pitch fork into the other pile, and found ice four or five inches below the surface

It looks like the only living vertebrate in the pond at this point is Gingrich the Newt. (I think he’s the same one that moved in last summer. And what else would you call a newt anyway?) I’ve fished out 6 or 8 dead frogs by now, and most of them look crushed. We are starting to look around at websites selling pond plants, and want to get those in before we start with more fish. I can see a lot of perennials poking through the left over leaves from last fall. Poking up out there already is the lupines and some heather. The sunset tonight was spectacular.

We did a walk about after work today, just to see what’s coming up. There are definite daffs and species tulips all over the place at this point. The cats all had a great time following us around, though mostly they enjoyed playing around with me on the front porch deck, dashing around the sawmill
