We spent all of today working on getting that downed tree out of the driveway, and it hasn’t been a good day for equipment, making it all more difficult. Frank’s Stihl chainsaw was broken yesterday by having the tree fall on it, and he bought a spare at Home Depot last night, but he really

We had quite the exciting and adventurous day out in the new garden today, probably more than we really wanted. There was one big oak tree that absolutely had to get cut before we could put in our first raised beds, but we’d left it to last because it really wanted to fall onto the

I am so sick of bugs! We are really being attacked this year by both the dreaded red lily beetle and the awful green Japanese beetle. I often go out in the evening to collect them off of the plants, but it’s a losing battle. I’m ruthless, though, and when I spot them I either

The very first mushroom actually came up yesterday, but I hoped it would get bigger, so I didn’t pick it. It didn’t. It’s one of the Hypsizygus ulmarius that we got from Fungi Perfecti. Stamets calls it the elm oyster mushroom, and it does taste like an oyster mushroom. We planted these guys late enough that getting mushrooms this year was iffy. We’re hoping for many more if frost holds off.

We went out into the new garden, today, to run some more of the trees that we have down already through the sawmill. It was largely unsuccessful, though. The sawmill broke about a hundred times, for a number of reasons, and it was very frustrating. The blade got thrown and wouldn’t go on correctly, the

Just a quick update on the mushroom front — there are no actual mushrooms out there yet, but there are lots of primordia, the little things that come before the actual mushrooms. We are psyched! I think this means that we will soon have real mushrooms, so maybe we actually did something right. In the

The pond is very pretty these days, and very full of algae. The water is clear, but we’re constantly pulling out netfuls of the stuff. I’m sure we’ve got too many animals in there: The nine remaining big fish are twice the size they were when we bought them, (much faster growth than our first

Lisa has been wanting better stats than webalizer for a while now, and heard about awstats in a thread on The Usual Suspects. We looked it over, and it does seem to be better. Lisa’s biggest like is that all the links on the ‘full list’ expansion page are live, whereas the expansion pages

Whew, it’s hot out there. I am not, however, complaining. We’ve had so much rain (almost 8 inches so far this month alone) that I haven’t been able to really do much in the garden, so I’ll take hot over hot and raining any day. We went out into the garden pretty early this morning,

We went to the grand opening of a Home Depot in Keene last night. Their nursery isn’t great, but we did get some good deals. We were a bit disappointed in how many zone six and seven plants we saw. Keene might be zone 5, but most of the hill towns around Keene are
