Our friend Paul came over today, and the three of us took a walk out in our woods. We had high hopes that all of the rain we’ve had this year would make for many good edible mushroom, and indeed, that was the case. Our big finds: Black Trumpet Mushrooms: We found tons of these.

We took a walk this evening, and just loved the way the house and garden looked in the twilight. The leaves on the trees are turning all over, but we seem seem to be at least a week from peak, which is strange. I heard on the radio that all this rain should make the colors in the leaves spectacular this year, because the leaves on the trees should be bigger. I really haven’t seen evidence of this yet this year, but the color seems to be delayed. Usually, the first weekend of October is peak for us, but it doesn’t seem to be happening this year.

My son asked for a message board on his band’s site and Lisa, who is something of a connoisseuse of message boards, recommended PHPBB. So I went and got it. I’m very pleased to report that I followed the instructions and it ‘just worked’. Of course this is on a server with MySQL and PHP already fully debugged and running. The instructions also expect you to get from “uses MySQL” to “better create a database and an admin user before I try to setup PHPBB” on your own. Fortunately, I did, and it worked. I did not actually customize the forum: Jeremy is a far better designer than I, but so far he’s reported no problems.

Just a very brief update to show off half of a huge hen of the woods that our friend Paul Abraham gifted us with today. Wow. Frank and I spent an hour or so cutting this up and sauteing it all so that we could freeze it. We were worried that it would take longer

Lyle Handy showed up at 7:30 this morning to get started stumping the new veggie patch. Heavy equipment is a good thing. Frank had him move the big stumps to the area that should be behind where the garden shed is going to go. He told him to scrape off what top soil there was

After far too many years of neglect, we hired Lyle Handy to work on the driveway this year. He’s bringing in probably eight loads of sure-pack, and starting with the worse sections, right in the middle. The driveway is really long, about 800 feet, and we have to maintain the whole thing ourselves. Since we

You can tell it is fall and we are far behind on the firewood, because we went out after work again to pick at it. But we were sitting in the gazebo with a glass of wine, and started to feel guilty, so what the heck. Frank might as well use at least one tank

It’s stress relief to get out in the garden, even if just for an hour, after work in the evenings. This year has been so wet, though, that mostly tonight we got out there because the lawn was long enough to cut as hay, and it was finally dry enough to mow. All of the fall flowers are in full bloom right now, and looking quite lovely. I need more of them, though. I’m mostly green, with a few splashes of pinks and yellows here and there. Oh, and some purples as well, with the asters and obedient plants. We haven’t had a freeze yet this year, so the window boxes are still in fine form as well. The leaves on the trees are getting more and more color. I think we’re still two weeks from peak color, though.

We didn’t get much done in the garden today. The weather was bad, and we were having major problems with one of the kids. Princess stayed with us the whole time, including taking a ride in the back of the truck! What little we did was mostly very close to the house, bringing in firewood

We’re finally home on the weekend again, and worked ourselves until we were exhausted outside today. Marmalade kept us company no matter where we went outside. It was very cute. The first thing we did was get started again on the firewood. We heat with wood on the first floor of our house, and in
