Even though it’s not specifically about the garden, it is about the outside part of the house, so I’ll mention it here anyway! Our anniversary gift to ourselves this year were two of these gargoyles, now climbing the sides of our log home. We absolutely love them, and are only sorry that they are so

Alright, the damn firewood is all in. Let winter come now, we’re ready! Of course, we don’t feel like we have enough, but you know, if we had more, we’d just be asking for a worse winter, because we always always run out of firewood. This year we have more than we’ve had since

It really did feel like a stolen day today. It was absolutely beautiful outside, and on a weekend, no less, and that almost never happens! We ran all of our errands in town as quickly as we could, but still got home late, around 2:00. We rushed into gardening grungy clothes and got outside as

We went outside mid-day today because the weather was just absolutely beautiful. Mid-50s, clear blue sky to start, then high pretty clouds, no wind. We don’t get many days like this this late into the year, so we took a break from work and cabin-fever and really enjoyed it. We got to one

Yep, another new toy, this one a mini-DV camcorder. The first thing I discovered is that firewire cards are no longer sold on every street corner. A little looking around the web showed dire warnings about most of the bogobrand ones for sale, so I spent a bit more and got one at Staples. I

It’s been really windy these last couple of days. Like most of the country, we’ve had gusts up around 50 mph, and sustained wind in the 30s for a while. It’s doing a number on the leaf raking we won’t have to do, which is nice. The driveway has a lot of branches and

These are not a winning combination. I finally broke down and decided to run Samba on the webserver in the outer bailey. This is so Lisa can put files into the various directories that constitute the vast Richards web empire. The protection games required to let her ftp everywhere without memorizing a bazillion passwords were

The ‘Espresso Oyster’ patch seems more worthwhile. Here they admit it’s just sawdust spawn which they recommend you mix with coffee grounds. They also say that hardwood sawdust is fine and shredded paper will work in a pinch. So that’s a big old plastic tub from WalMart (where else would you go for plastic?) with a 50-50 mix of oak planer shavings and coffee grounds. It ought to work fine, but may take longer than desirable to fruit because of having so much substrate. If it works, we’re totally set for next summer though. We have coffee and wood chips enough to grow these things by the acre.

I bought a Nikon EOS 300D a couple weeks ago. This is one seriously cool camera. We wanted another camera so I can take garden pictures while Lisa travels with her camera. We’ve each won a (bush league) photo contest this year, so we felt justified in upgrading to semi-pro gear. The biggest win over

Our order from Fungi Perfecti arrived today. Those are the Cinnamon Cap and the Pioppino ‘Mushroom Patches’ which basically say “put them in a cool place and water them.” I did. We’ll see.
