Pansy germination
Posted: February 15th, 2004 by Lisa
It’s taking a lot longer than I think it should for my pansies to germinate. It might be perhaps that I’m impatient, but I don’t think so. I planted these guys on the first, and here it is the sixteenth and they are just barely starting to come up. I’m leaving the lights on all the time again this year. Last year it was an experiment, but I think it was a successful one, so I’m going to repeat it again. The theory behind turning the lights off at night is to give the plants some rest, some sleep, but I read some research that said that the amount of light from artificial light is such a minuscule fraction of the light from the sun that they don’t need to rest to process it.

Snow guage
Posted: February 13th, 2004 by Lisa
We broke down and ordered a snow guage from Gardener’s Supply up in Burlington. We bought the larger one, rather than the small one with an extension. I’m still not sure that it will be tall enough for a normal winter, but I guess it’ll say enough just to have it completely buried. This one measures three feet. Pretty, though.

Finally a foot
Posted: February 4th, 2004 by Lisa
We finally got a big storm yesterday, and it was beautiful outside today. Frank got out there with his big camera and took a lot of shots. I think some of these will be good enough to show up in the gardenporn catalog later. I definitely want to get some winterish shots that people might be able to use for holiday cards next year that aren’t religious. So anyway, finally a foot of snow. It’s been a very light year for snow so far, so it was much needed.

WordPress URL problems continue
Posted: February 2nd, 2004 by Frank
After my last entry, I thought I had Zinmasters all squared away. Unfortunately I was wrong: Here are rewrite rules suggested by WordPress: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^archives/([0-9]{4})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?([0-9]+)?/?$ /index.php?year=$1&monthnum=$2&day=$3&page=$4 [QSA] RewriteRule ^archives/category/?(.*) /index.php?category_name=$1 [QSA] The first one doesn’t work for some reason. I now know that the problem is on the right side of

Seed starting
Posted: February 1st, 2004 by Lisa
I think this is the official start to the 2004 Gardening Season. The only way to indulge my gardening obsession while living in Zone 4 is to start my plants from seed, under lights. I started four flats of pansies today. Well, to be perfectly accurate, three of pansies, one of violas. After much
