Llama fiber spun into yarn Another set on Flickr, uploaded by LisaNH. For my second attempt at spinning fiber, Princess and I tried the llama fleece from their first and only shearing, in the spring of 2006. I found it spun differently than the Icelandic roving, which is interesting,

The sunrise was absolutely beautiful this morning. It feels so good to be home. I’ve really missed living here. I walked out onto the deck as quietly as I could to take a picture, and managed not to rouse the sheep, amazingly. We got a call not long after from one of the guys

After too much reading and fretting about logistics and safety for the chickens, I’ve decided to do something I understand and which matches our environment. I’m just going to build a dragable chicken coop which can follow the sheep around. We’ll have to let the chickens out in the morning and pen them up at

Last summer and fall, Valerie and Kevin cleared about half an acre, renting an escavator, pulling the trees out completely, so that it isn’t stumpy out there, which is great. There are still a few large brush piles out there, though. We tried to burn one this winter, and probably got two-thirds of it

We are traveling for a little mini-weekend vacation on March 2, to Greenbay, Wisconsin. Frank mentioned that perhaps we should drive, so that we could stop in to some of his relatives in Michigan. I remembered that there’s an Icelandic chicken breeder out in Illinois, and maybe we could pick up some chicks or eggs.

After a year away, I get to do all of my window boxes again this year. Yay! I’m so excited. Wow. Even before the landscaping was done on the yard, I was already doing the window boxes around the deck. Pretty cool tradition to have. I like it because it gives me fiddling gardening

Frank’s mother, Ginny, has been terrified of animals her whole life. She worked as a home economics instructor for Detroit Edison, and often visited houses to teach women how to use electric ovens and do lighting plans. She said she dreaded going to houses with animals. She is very nervous even around our cat. But

Bucky is an older guy who lives in the village, about a mile away. We’ve been on waving relations since we moved here in 1990. He’s the local handyman, and we pass his house on our way to town. At different times, he’s had horses, chickens, and dogs, and it was normal for the chickens

In the late summer of 2005, the Quinns asked us to have our sheep help them reclaim a pasture, because their horses were cherry picking, and they’d seen the fabulous job the girls had done on our driveway. Since we were down to nothing and about ready to have to put them on hay, we
