And that’s a wrap!

In January, we bought three new bred ewes from Dancing Lamb farm. We bought and put up the hoop house that we are now storing hay inside. We also put a wood floor in it. (It’s bouncy, but still holding up a year later, so that’s good.) Having the hay under good cover has

Oh!

Oh, Ginny. Why? Why must you tear the twine that’s holding those panels together, right before my eyes? You looked oh so satisfied with it ripped in two, with all your very deliberate tugging. I’m really glad that we used about ten times more than we needed. Too bad the fence didn’t move when

Future Plans

Frank skirted a bunch of fleece today. We have several piles going — wool that we are going to turn into wool socks — wool that we are going to turn into wool comforters — wool that we are going to turn into roving. We have so much to process that it isn’t funny. Our

Welcome to Mack Hill Farm

Why, Mr. UPS Man. Why do you back up your big truck all the way down our 800 foot driveway? Well, I never know what to expect. I’m poised for a quick get-away. Welcome to Mack Hill Farm, where you never know which critter will greet you! (Minx, Lily, Polly, Misty, Ginny — I

Bread and cheese

I thought this felt like a lot of snow early in the season. Then I heard the other day that we’d already broken a 100 year record for the amount of snow we’ve had in December. It’s the 27th, and we are expecting 3-4 inches tonight, and 3-4 later in the week. Eek! I

Chores, and playing

Bjarki might have met his match. The pup is just a biting bundle of energy, and today they were both play play play all day long. She only took a couple of little power naps, and always wanted to go outside for more. She’s doing pretty well on the don’t chase the chickens front,

Christmas Dinner

It seemed sort of necessary to have leg of lamb for Christmas dinner today. There was only four of us, but our lambs are very small, so we defrosted two legs and cooked them up. I rubbed olive oil all over them, then stone ground mustard, freshly ground pepper, kosher salt, and minced garlic.

Wicked Wind

We lost about a foot of snow overnight with all of the rain. Unfortunately, it’s now a skating rink in all of the pathways, which is less than fun. But it is supposed to stay above freezing during the day for the next week, so who knows how much snow we’ll lose. As long

Happy Solstice

Little Ms. Naughty is just something else today. She’s so spunky and willful, but adorable. She is just fearless — she finds her way into all the pens, grrs and args at the sheep, until they take a step near her, and then she runs away, only to grr and arg at them again,

Back in the saddle

Even if you go over the edge, the thing to do the very next day is get right back in the saddle. Driving that tractor in the woods in deep snow is really not very fun, just for the record. I’m pretty good at maneuvering it around, but I don’t like it, and when
