Hermione finally had her piglets yesterday, 119 days after coming home from East Hill Farm. Nominal pig gestation is 115 days: She pushed it as hard as she could and of course had them in a snowstorm. The good news is that all is well, six live piglets that she is feeding and looking

Our next expansion arrived yesterday and today: Sixteen Pekin ducks and ten Toulouse geese yesterday, 26 White Midget turkeys today. The ducks and geese spent the night in the living room while the woodstove warmed the basement. Today everyone went downstairs. They’re all set up with gamebird starter and water, on a bed of

Spring is oh so slowly coming. The twice weekly storms are more rain than snow, and I can leave the hose out to water the animals. We had the same temperatures in December, but the December sun was not enough to thaw the hose in the afternoon, while the March sun does.

Wow did we have pig DRAMA today. Hermione is ready to pop any second, I swear. She looks so uncomfortable, so huge. Ginny found a way back from the horse pasture and went into the Pig Palace, where Hermione pitched a fit to end all fits. Get OUT. Get OUT! From now on, every

Oh mud season has begun. Ms. Minerva would like nothing else than for me to sit my tushie down on the ground so she can climb up onto my lap. But it’s a muddy mucky mess out there! She has to satisfy herself for however long it takes before my legs start to cramp.

Hermione looks like she is going to pop any second now. We still have both she and Ginny in the Pig Palace, because we just couldn’t figure out another place to put one of them, but it’s really bothering me. I don’t want them to be together when Hermione gives birth, because Ginny is

Around noon yesterday, during the last break in the rain, I brought in 24 more gallons of sap. We then spent the day watching rain and the night listening to wind. Today was cold and very windy. We fired up the evaporator first thing after breakfast and ran it till about 6:30 We boiled

Whew. What a long day yesterday was. After Thursday’s really good sap run and all that yummy sap we collected, we finally got the evaporator together. It wasn’t too complicated, except that there wasn’t an instruction sheet or anything (grrr!), so we had bought the wrong thickness of firebrick. We decided to just put

In setting up the Localvore blog I needed to duplicate some of the custom pages that I made for this site. The categories page was the first. Lo and behold, when I went to select a custom template for the page I was writing, not only were there none, but the select box was also

When we last wrote, we were expecting the pigs to farrow any day. Well, we woke up Saturday morning (Feb. 16), I let the dogs out and they started barking their fool heads off immediately, so we knew something was up. Sure enough, we had piglets, who were squealing and crying, which is what
