We finally attacked the bed where I want all of the new bulbs to go. I was dreading it, but it wasn’t that bad. We pulled all of the glads and dahlias, and I’m amazed at how great that soil is. This is the new bed I did this spring, with the lasagna method and

Okay, we got that one bed, the primary one for the spring flowers, put to bed for the year. It turned out to be a huge amount of work, but I’m hoping to not have to repeat it in the spring. We covered it all with a couple of inches of beautiful black compost and

Well, there’s no getting around it. It stuck. I woke up this morning hoping the snow had turned to rain overnight, and instead I saw two inches on the ground and the snow was still coming. It’s pretty, I admit, but I’m not ready. I need more fall, please. I like fall. To outline the

No gardening over the weekend. Saturday I cut and stacked firewood after taking Lisa to the airport. Sunday rained all day. One more package from Dutch gardens today. Their website listed hardy (zone 4) glads, and also grecian windflowers rated for zone 4 instead of the usual zone 7. We’d been reading about people wintering

Frank finally broke down and let me order a new truckload of pine bark mulch. I was whining that because I’m the one who does the majority of the weeding, and because we ran out early this year, he doesn’t see how much it helps. I know it robs nitrogen, but my thought is that

With how rainy the weather’s been this year, we’ve really gotten behind on the chores that need to get done before snow flies. We figure the only way we are going to get through them is to work outside after work if at all possible. Today, it was clear and cold, and we didn’t get

It rained all day today. It was more than a drizzle, but it wasn’t that cold, and because we have so many things to do, we worked out in it anyway. Frank dealt with it far better than I did, because I got whiny and cold and complained a lot, and he seemed to have

After far too many years of neglect, we hired Lyle Handy to work on the driveway this year. He’s bringing in probably eight loads of sure-pack, and starting with the worse sections, right in the middle. The driveway is really long, about 800 feet, and we have to maintain the whole thing ourselves. Since we

Gah, more rain today. But we knew it was coming, so we got out there early in the morning to finish up stuff that really had to get done. It’s getting very late to plant dahlias and glads, and I’m glad they are all in now. I wasn’t sure where to put them. The spot

What a hit these species tulips are turning out to be. Even with the ones eaten by the mice, tons of them are coming up. (Note to self for next year. Figure out something else to try to keep all of the critters away from the yummy bulbs.) We planted 450 bulbs or something like that in the fall, all on one day, and wow, the results are just spectacular. We had some out there already, but this year is a much nicer display than last year. I’m going to be watching the Van Engelen website very closely! They come online with their new stuff at the end of the month. We’ve got lots of room out there for many more bulbs.
