Frank still thinks I’m nuts, but I worked my tail off today putting in that new bed where the lilacs I planted aren’t going to make it. I think it is probably twenty feet long, and it entailed much digging up of sod and dirt, hauling of much crap, and generally hard, physical labor. I

Even in midwinter there’s some gardening activity worth preserving. First the mushrooms. The enokitake had to get moved out of the fridge to the basement to make room for holiday food. Unfortunately stuff in the basement gets neglected, and we’ve had only one half-hearted flush. We’ve gotten two pretty good flushes from the pioppino

It actually turned out to be quite nice today. Sure, it was windy, which makes it difficult when I am trying to rake leaves, but still, no snow except in the really shady spots like the front porch, no rain, pretty warm, and sunny. Not bad after two days of snow. We got outside pretty

Whew, it’s hot out there. I am not, however, complaining. We’ve had so much rain (almost 8 inches so far this month alone) that I haven’t been able to really do much in the garden, so I’ll take hot over hot and raining any day. We went out into the garden pretty early this morning,

The weather’s been nice enough in the evenings lately that we are spending time sitting out in the gazebo with a glass of wine. One of the things I noticed last night was that I haven’t touched my forgotten bed, the one directly behind the gazebo. It can stay forgotten for much of the year

It seems like it happened overnight, but poof, the comumbine are in bloom all over the garden. I like the areas I have them. I have many right in the front of the house, and they honestly seem the happiest. Big plants, many blooms, quite pretty. I took a dwarf variety last year and planted

We got outside in the garden after work today, mostly because it was beautiful weather and puttering out there gives us an excuse to get out there. I messed around on the trampoline as well, which was fun. But mostly, we spread compost. In particular, we are moving back toward that area where we cut

The weather is finally nice enough to get out there and get started on the spring chores. First up, I’m absolutely that the entire lawn needs to be raked before anything can be applied to the lawn. It looks like we left too much cut grass on it too late in the season, or it

We finished the compost bins today. We made pretty quick progress, actually. From bags of coffee grounds to finished compost bin, hopefully brewing away, in two days. And the best part, according to my Yankee Husband, is that we didn't spend a penny. All made from scraps in his wood pile, which never seem to get any smaller. I layered the coffee grounds with alternating layers of leaves and wood ash, and Frank hauled over some of our mulch pile with some dirt, to try to jump start it. I feel like I need to add something else, but I'm not sure what. We only half filled one bin, though the temptation to get some more from the coffee shop is very strong. Maybe next week.
