I’m working down in the flatlands now, so weekend days are precious. We need to get the farm set up so Lisa can do more than just take care of critters. And then soon, I need to be able to do more than that. A year ago we had extra firewood, but the sheep shed

There was a message on the Monadnock Beekeepers mailing list on Monday that Black Cat Honey had several extra packages of bees and would anyone want them. I called half an hour later and got the last two. It seems that B. Weaver down in Texas had sent out a truck full of bees and

We’ve had entire week of warm and dry weather, which is good because we have a million things to do. The waterfowl went outside last weekend, in electric poultry netting. They started with a dogloo for shelter, yesterday we added a dog crate so the ducks and geese each have their own digs. They’re

We’ve had a few warm days this week, and the bees are flying after six weeks or more cooped up in the hives. I was thrilled to see that the hive I thought would be dead by Christmas is still alive, if weak. They must have a queen after all. I gave all four

I finally bottled the honey this morning. We got a total of 40 bears from our 35 pounds of honey. I thought I had bought 12 ounce bears back in 2005 from Betterbee, and so I just ordered a bunch more. It turns out I had bought one pounders, so now we have two

Friday night in Marlow was entirely too exciting. Starting midafternoon or so, there was a clear smell of smoke in the air in the southwest part of town. Thing is, after the nine houses on Baine Rd, it’s two or three miles to the Alstead or Gilsum town lines, and another mile or so

I did a bee check Saturday with the intention of harvesting and extracting honey. On the formerly queenless side, I saw neither queen, but did see brood in both, pollen coming in to both, and wax being drawn and sugar syrup stored. The more populous hive was ready for more syrup. Actually it’s ready for

This weekend has been hazy hot and humid. The kind you’d much rather spend at the lake. However we got quite a bit done. I actually got the sawmill running Friday night. A new blade finally got it working. We got four logs done, then I had to change the blade again, and it’s

I called SMG (who is now Champion) on Monday, and got some advice on the sawmill. (Yes, they now have bilingual tech support.) I’ll be writing some pages about maintaining the sawmill soon. There’s a lot that’s simply not in the manual. Anyway, the advice was on shimming to extend the length of the

We slaughtered our first six chickens today. There are six in the fridge plus a bag of pieces for stock in the freezer. But first the housekeeping updates. Bees: They are slacking. There is a little progress in the leftmost hive, nothing at all in any of the others. I’ll be skipping next week’s check.
