Mosquito Trap Experiences

We were early adopters (2003) of the original Mosquito Magnets. We bought the Defender model, which uses wall AC rather than a thermocouple in the propane burner: It was several hundred dollars less. It performed very well, and we had the most pleasantly bug free summer ever and were planning to buy another one to

Beavers, Dammit

Out behind our house is the remnant of a large (10-20 acre) beaver pond, where the beavers drowned a serious spruce forest between 1960 and 1980, give or take a couple years on each end. They had left fairly recently when I bought the land in 1986 and there was still standing water under

Latch and Halter

Look at that latch. What a wonderful sight and sound that was. It didn’t take me too long to get her going. Mama’s milk gave her a good boost of energy. I mostly left them alone, but Pearl kept coming over to the corner and stomping for my attention, wanted help. I swear she

Granny/Square, With a Twist

I’ve wondered for much of my life why I have to be so careful to correctly tie a square knot rather than a granny when it seems that others get them right effortlessly. I have the same trouble with some other kinds of knots ,too. Sometime over the weekend, I had a rush of brains

Farming is Hard

It’s really hard, right now. We lost a llama yesterday, so suddenly that I can hardly believe it happened. It’s hard to even write about it, but I guess I want to document it in case someone else has something similar happen. On Saturday, Vinnie had a lamb, the first one in the pen with

Catching up in the flower gardens

Because we spent the majority of the weekend doing stuff out in the new garden, not much got done in the flower gardens at all. So we went out after work today, really just to do a walk-through because we thought the bugs would be awful, and ended up staying outside for a couple of

Gazebo time

We are spending almost every evening out in the gazebo at this point. When the sun starts to go down, it just calls our name. The screened in part was to keep away the bugs, but the mosquito magnet has been working so well that we can sit out there with the door propped open

Gazebo Living

When we built the screened gazebo, we knew we’d like it. But wow, we really really like it out there. The view of the window boxes, with the flowers draping over, is really spectacular. We’ve taken to sitting out there in the evening with a glass of wine. We can smell the fragrance of the flowers as well, and it’s all just very special. The screening has worked out very well. The mosquitoes and deer flies are really pretty bad, but they don’t bug us at all sitting behind the screens. We bought two Cobble Mountain Hammock chairs, and they are working out really well. We are almost living out here, lately. We love it.

Bugs, bugs and more bugs!

We poked our noses out to do a few things in the garden today, but the bugs were bad and it was so hot that we came in after about an hour, I think. I noticed that it’s great mindless stuff for me … I wander around, deadhead and weed, poke and prod. I try
