A Day in the Life

There’s a cool group on Flickr called A day in the life. Four times a year, at the start of the new season, people from around the world submit five photos (and an optional one video) to the pool documenting that day. I started in the spring this year, so have 2008’s season changes all

My Climber and escape artists

Oh does she love to climb things, including round hay bales, firewood piles, decks, ladders. The higher she can get, the more she loves it. But it has to be in the light. She’ll refuse and whine about jumping onto my bed in the middle of the night and insists that I turn on

Snug as a bug

It got down to just one little degree above zero last night before I headed off to bed. We had the house at 68°F inside, though, and are awfully proud of ourselves. We haven’t yet turned on the propane stove, and are determined to heat with only wood for as long as we can.

The sound of spring on our farm.

Flickr is now allowing short video clips. I finally figured out how to make my camera take a video and what software to use to get it to Flickr. (All by myself! Go me.) If I can link them properly in the same fashion, here are some clips from yesterday. I still need to get several critters to perform on command, so stay tuned, and hope for better weather. It’s horribly windy and cold out there today.

Just Ducky

Our next expansion arrived yesterday and today: Sixteen Pekin ducks and ten Toulouse geese yesterday, 26 White Midget turkeys today. The ducks and geese spent the night in the living room while the woodstove warmed the basement. Today everyone went downstairs. They’re all set up with gamebird starter and water, on a bed of

Oh!

Oh, Ginny. Why? Why must you tear the twine that’s holding those panels together, right before my eyes? You looked oh so satisfied with it ripped in two, with all your very deliberate tugging. I’m really glad that we used about ten times more than we needed. Too bad the fence didn’t move when

Chores, and playing

Bjarki might have met his match. The pup is just a biting bundle of energy, and today they were both play play play all day long. She only took a couple of little power naps, and always wanted to go outside for more. She’s doing pretty well on the don’t chase the chickens front,

Christmas Dinner

It seemed sort of necessary to have leg of lamb for Christmas dinner today. There was only four of us, but our lambs are very small, so we defrosted two legs and cooked them up. I rubbed olive oil all over them, then stone ground mustard, freshly ground pepper, kosher salt, and minced garlic.

Back in the saddle

Even if you go over the edge, the thing to do the very next day is get right back in the saddle. Driving that tractor in the woods in deep snow is really not very fun, just for the record. I’m pretty good at maneuvering it around, but I don’t like it, and when

Oops, I did it again.

I sure seem to have a knack for getting the tractor stuck in ditches or foundation holes, or in the mud or snow. Wow. It sucks. I was pulling a pine log for the newly established pulp wood pile, misjudged where the ditch was, and got it good and stuck. Frank tried using the
