The sound of spring on our farm.

Flickr is now allowing short video clips. I finally figured out how to make my camera take a video and what software to use to get it to Flickr. (All by myself! Go me.) If I can link them properly in the same fashion, here are some clips from yesterday. I still need to get several critters to perform on command, so stay tuned, and hope for better weather. It’s horribly windy and cold out there today.

Just Ducky

Our next expansion arrived yesterday and today: Sixteen Pekin ducks and ten Toulouse geese yesterday, 26 White Midget turkeys today. The ducks and geese spent the night in the living room while the woodstove warmed the basement. Today everyone went downstairs. They’re all set up with gamebird starter and water, on a bed of

Oops, I did it again.

I sure seem to have a knack for getting the tractor stuck in ditches or foundation holes, or in the mud or snow. Wow. It sucks. I was pulling a pine log for the newly established pulp wood pile, misjudged where the ditch was, and got it good and stuck. Frank tried using the

Logging in the snow

We logged for a while this afternoon, despite the snow. It was that sort of gentle snow, with fat, fluffy flakes, and the temp was just below freezing, with no wind, so why not. Frank found a trucker, and he thought my idea of using the long driveway to roadside next to would work

Navigating rough waters

One of the (thousand) times I was walking the puppy today, I was pretty sure I heard what sounded like an eggaluyah. But since I had the (naughty) puppy with me, I didn’t want to take her into the coop to find out, so I just told Frank. I was right. (I speak chicken!)

Being naughty

Bjarki had a great time today, introducing the new pup to all of the farm animals. She is just a fearless little thing. Everyone wanted to meet her, too. Doppa and Sue were the two sheep most interested, but she went under every fence, into every pen, to at least take a look. I

Meet Töfradís

We’re going to call her Deeza, for short. She’s an Icelandic Sheepdog, like Bjarki, and I just picked her up today. She’s a little spitfire! Soft and fluffy and quite brave. Today has been all about picking her up at the airport and bringing her home, and working with her and Bjarki to co-exist. That’s going pretty well, actually, mostly because she is so brave. She’s just recently weaned, too, so keeps rooting all over, poor thing. So now we have a male and female purebred Icelandic Sheepdog. Woo!

Blizzard

It was really hard to motivate myself to get out there and do morning chores this morning. At 7 a.m., it was 11°F with 18 mph winds, steady snow, at about an inch an hour rate. But we bundled up, long johns and double socks underneath my ski suit, and Frank put on

A day on the farm

We took a rather disappointing trip over to a feed store in Vermont, to see if their prices were cheaper, since they were right on the railroad line. It turns out they are the same as the (very high) prices we are finding in Keene, which is really disappointing. I’ve got to source some more

Retail Therapy

We’ve been pretty lucky, in that we can leave the puppy outside to play for an hour or two without much bother. He mostly hangs out with Misty, and I have got to get a picture of the two of them playing. He will bring her his ball, and she will push it with
