Horse adventures

Jeremy came over this weekend, and helped us knock together the frame of the horse structure. We busted our tail non-stop, and barely got enough done. We had a drop dead time of dark on Sunday to meet, and we did, but have so much more to go. We just covered the frame with

The Mud and the Muck

I almost afraid to say it, but we sort of kind of maybe made some progress this weekend. The sheep aren’t happy where they are, but they have lots of room out on the hill, three out of four sides are permanent fencing, and the last side is electronet, but because it’s a straight run,

Predators, Parasites, Persistance

I’m discouraged, lately. I think we both are. The only thing that is really thriving is the bees. (Murphy — back off. We do not need to have something happen to them now, thanks!) The sheep are having huge parasite problems. Selina and Fiona both showed awful bottle jaw, so we were worming them frantically,

Full hands

We took the truck into town yesterday, so we could visit Wellscroft Farm to pick up some electrical tape and portable fencing to use for the horses, for a hopeless search for heirloom tomato plants, and to visit the new Cheshire Horse store. Dave showed me how to stop the puppy from barking while he

Working in the Rain

Last weekend was the big push to bring the horses home. Jeremy asked Lisa what she wanted for Mother’s Day, and her response was “help”. Since she actually spent Mother’s Day at the New Hampshire Sheep and Wool Festival, he arranged to come over the next weekend. Of course, it then rained hard all day,

Farmtek Clearspan “Buildings”

We bought one of those temporary ‘tent” garage things from Farmtek to store hay in. This was pretty much an act of desperation because we weren’t here to do anything else. We finally got it assembled today and a hay drop is scheduled for Sunday. In our particular circumstances I have to give it a

PHPBB Just works

My son asked for a message board on his band’s site and Lisa, who is something of a connoisseuse of message boards, recommended PHPBB. So I went and got it. I’m very pleased to report that I followed the instructions and it ‘just worked’. Of course this is on a server with MySQL and PHP already fully debugged and running. The instructions also expect you to get from “uses MySQL” to “better create a database and an admin user before I try to setup PHPBB” on your own. Fortunately, I did, and it worked. I did not actually customize the forum: Jeremy is a far better designer than I, but so far he’s reported no problems.

First Sawmill Run

We used the sawmill for the first time today. Great fun and very productive. By the way, the mill is the 13 horse model from SMG Morewood. I shopped pretty hard and this one seems competitive with the Norwood and the Woodmizer LT15, and it’s two grand less than the Woodmizer and one grand less

A Machinist I’m Not

I finally started work on getting the sawmill up and running. The angle iron for the track has been sitting here for a month, the carriage a month longert than that. I just need to drill 20 holes in quarter inch steel, and that’s that. Yup. I got Jeremy to help me move the angle

Jamming

I’m not sure all fathers would agree, but I think Frank thought his Father’s Day was pretty darn okay. The sun was shining (finally!) and we spent most of the day outside working in the new garden. After we could barely move from exhaustion, we soaked off the grime in the whirlpool tub and then
