Beavers, Dammit

Out behind our house is the remnant of a large (10-20 acre) beaver pond, where the beavers drowned a serious spruce forest between 1960 and 1980, give or take a couple years on each end. They had left fairly recently when I bought the land in 1986 and there was still standing water under

Miserable Misty

Poor thing. She just hates everyone and everything right now. I’m trying to coddle her as much as I can, to not add to her stress. The current theory with what killed Mary is an overrun of a common bacteria that lives in their respiratory tract, and that can be caused by stress. The vet

Bitten & Smitten

On Saturday, we took a ride over to Dancing Lamb Farm in New York to pick up our three new girls. Mike Kelley gave us a wonderful tour of her dairy operation, and since I need an article for the next ISBONA newsletter, I’m going to save all of those pictures and words for that

Fall clean up

We had a pretty productive, busy and fun weekend, actually, for two people who still aren’t back to normal and who were homebodies the whole time. The weather did the promised warmness, and the rain held off until last night, long after we’d quit working outside. And work out in the garden we did. Lots of fall clean up, cutting off the green foliage that’d been zapped by the early freezes and snow. We got a bunch of leaves off the grass, except where the snow still covered it. I absolutely wore myself out with the rake, but just from lack of stamina, which I’m hoping lots of exercise will cure. Many of the critters are very confused by the quick change in weather as well. Frank found this snake, and many frogs.

Blooming Roses

Pretty, pretty roses all in bloom in the garden right now. The climbing white rose, Iceberg, that we got from Arena this year, is doing particularly well on the trellis underneath the gazebo. I just love this rose, so classic looking. The weather has been wonderful today, mid-70s, blue skies. The mosquito magnet is working

Snakes in the garden

We are still mostly cocooning inside, though I did get outside a little bit to do a bit of weeding, today. I scared myself silly, though, sticking my hand near some rocks to weed, and pulling out the left-over skin from a snake. Yikes! Two minutes later, while I was jumping around, shaking my hand, the live snake slithered over my foot. Time to go inside! It’s about time to start transplanting things, too, though I’ll need Frank’s help with all the lifting and moving. I’m under very strict lifting limitations — no more than five pounds, and actually, I’m not even pushing it much because it’s painful. It’s hard to work out in the garden without lifting more than five pounds, you know?

May flies

The month of May is flying by, and we are full of may flies as well. I am so bug bitten after spending the day out there yesterday, even in the bug suit, darnit. Have many bites on my fingers, which are all swollen up now. We saw some critters in the pond for the
