I’m working down in the flatlands now, so weekend days are precious. We need to get the farm set up so Lisa can do more than just take care of critters. And then soon, I need to be able to do more than that. A year ago we had extra firewood, but the sheep shed

Lyle Handy showed up at 7:30 this morning to get started stumping the new veggie patch. Heavy equipment is a good thing. Frank had him move the big stumps to the area that should be behind where the garden shed is going to go. He told him to scrape off what top soil there was

We spent all of today working on getting that downed tree out of the driveway, and it hasn’t been a good day for equipment, making it all more difficult. Frank’s Stihl chainsaw was broken yesterday by having the tree fall on it, and he bought a spare at Home Depot last night, but he really

I tried to introduce the cats to the catnip plant that I planted earlier this year. I caught Yoda chewing on my clematis earlier in the evening, and I hate to scold him because he’s such a scaredy cat and I don’t want to scare him, but c’mon. Not on my clematis! None of them

We both kept ourselves busy with gardening tasks today. We went up north this morning, looking for breakfast and grow bulbs. Breakfast was good, but neither Walmart, K-Mart, nor the pet store in Claremont had a single grow bulb for our shop light fixtures. We should have stocked up better when we saw them all

I traveled all week, so Frank had to maintain all of the seedlings in the basement. Unlike the last time I was away, everything survived and thrived, even, this time. I’m not sure if it’s because of lack of humidity in the basement or what, but some of the trays need to be watered two

After much playing around, talking, drawing, arguing and generally having fun, Frank and I came up with this basic garden design for the new veggie garden that we hope to start this year. We drew it probably a hundred different ways on paper, and finally had a rush of brain to the head and cut

Putting modesty aside, I have to say my window boxes are an unqualified success. They just grab your eye when you drive up to the house. They’d be even better if only they weren’t pulling the deck railing down! But Frank has a plan, I think, for how to fix it, as soon as I
