We spent all of today working on getting that downed tree out of the driveway, and it hasn’t been a good day for equipment, making it all more difficult. Frank’s Stihl chainsaw was broken yesterday by having the tree fall on it, and he bought a spare at Home Depot last night, but he really

Today we mostly cut lumber from the trees that we’ve previously dropped. In particular, there was a huge oak log that Frank had dropped some time before the fire. We backed the truck up to it, pulled it out, and found that half of it had rotted away. Frank was convinced there was still some

We got out in the garden nice and early today, and really got a lot done. Frank ordered some mushroom spawn from Fungi Perfecti. Of the three kinds he ordered, two are back-ordered, but we got the Blewitt, so wanted to get the bed built for it. So first, we hauled the logs that we’d

After work today, we went out (finally!) to start to dig up those trillium. I still haven’t quite figured out how we are going to ship them, but we found many, many plants. I filled up all the random pots I had in the basement, sometimes putting two or three small plants per pot. They

Despite the gray and wet day out there today, it wasn’t actually raining for the first time in days, so we were determined to get in as much work in the garden as we could. We’ve been wanting to get started on the clearing and such for the land that will someday be the

Austin and Gavin had great fun with more tractor rides in the garden, and much feeding of the fish. We are now feeding them the low temp food which they don’t like near as much. I think the boys gave them enough for a week’s worth, however. The only things blooming out there now are yellow flowers, asters and um, that’s it. Many yellows, which go great with all the colors on the changing leaves. The burning bushes look great as well. I’m complimenting Mother Nature’s colors, that’s what I’m doing. Why try to compete? The silly Halloween mums are all in bud, but no blossoms yet. The window boxes are looking very ratty. Things that didn’t get finished before I have surgery tomorrow: I have 450 bulbs that need to get into the ground. Bringing in the window boxes. Oh well. This surgery should be pretty minor, and maybe I’ll get to it next weekend.

It was record-breaking hot here today. 99 degrees. We had a hugely productive day, though. We worked ourselves until we were exhausted, but got a huge amount of stuff done in the garden. The cats (both Princess and Yoda) supervised nearly everything we did today, clearly enjoying the weather and the company. They are

We rushed around madly last night but did everything we could think of to prepare for the snow that’s coming. We had to haul the rest of the window boxes off of the decks. There were still many left out there, but at least they’re all now in the house, at least. We covered the

We did have that hard freeze earlier this week. Then it warmed up for a couple of days, but there was definite frost on the car this morning, and many of my plants bit the dust, but not all of them. I covered a bunch up with clear plastic bags until I couldn’t stand the cold anymore, and the wind blew it all away. We did get outside and have a productive day in the yard today though. The list of fall chores is very long, and we got a lot of them knocked off, which feels great. I spent a long time carefully mowing the lawn. It might be the last time this season. I have to admit I’m impressed with how the lawn’s come out, finally. We seeded and weeded enough, that’s for sure, but it sure has paid off. Looks very healthy, actually.

So, I’ve been meaning to take notes about the status of the lawn. Overall, I’m telling myself that it’s not too bad for the one year old it is. But really, it looks like it’s only one year old. Just before we cut it, it might be called lush looking, in a few spots. But
