Back in the saddle

Even if you go over the edge, the thing to do the very next day is get right back in the saddle. Driving that tractor in the woods in deep snow is really not very fun, just for the record. I’m pretty good at maneuvering it around, but I don’t like it, and when

Battened down

I got Ms. Misty moved one pen over today, and it wasn’t that hard. She really wants to be behind a fence right now, and when I just left the gate open and let her choose to go in with gentle pressure from behind, she walked in. Whew. Having her out the day before

Really Winter Now

We had ten inches of snow yesterday. That leaves about a foot on the ground and no reason to expect it to melt before April. Mike showed up and plowed, but for some reason didn’t seem to do as much as usual. This gave Lisa a reason to fire up the tractor and do

Lambing, Shearing, Clearing

What a day we had yesterday. Even this morning, we are still exhausted, and that’s with Valerie coming over to help. We are just absolutely wiped out. We started the day with the first lamb of the season. We went out in the morning to let the chickens out, and Frank came back

Calling it a year

Last year we called it a year on November 23, because everything was done. This year I’m calling it on December 19th because it’s supposed to snow tonight. Lisa joked last year that we were afraid to stack anymore firewood because we always run out and we didn’t want to see the winter we’d get

Mmmm, sunflower seeds!

Lisa is back in on the job out of town, so I’m on my own. I was out on business Tuesday and didn’t get back until after five. The sheep had started bedding down, but roused quickly for hay. I’ve read that they don’t like to chew cud after dark, and thus when fed late

Douglas Adams, we need you

Herewith, another thirty-six hours in the saga of the sheep. After we got Panic into his micro pen yesterday, I took Lisa to the airport. When I got back it was almost dark, and there were intermittent bangings from the sheep compound. Of course when I went down to check, everybody was the soul of

Finishing Shed Three

We rushed off to HomeDepot as soon as everyone was fed this morning to get the three metal roof panels for this last shed. Unfortunately, they only had three left and they were in pretty grim shape, but we couldn’t wait for more to come in, so we just took the discount and took them

Fences

Calvin gave us some incredibly good fencing that he’d taken up at his place. Frank went over to get it yesterday, and came home with three bundles of woven wire. He thinks this stuff is much better for going up hills like we’re going to have to do, and we feel grateful to have gotten

Mad Rush

What did we do today? I can hardly remember. Worked on the garden shed foundation. Ran the sawmill. Until we were exhausted! Fed the bees. Frank’s switched to a 2-1 sugar/water ratio, and both hives are still taking it. Only a few of them are flying these days. Suddenly the bidens in my window
