Bug Damage

I am so sick of bugs! We are really being attacked this year by both the dreaded red lily beetle and the awful green Japanese beetle. I often go out in the evening to collect them off of the plants, but it’s a losing battle. I’m ruthless, though, and when I spot them I either

Today It’s the Tiger Lilies

The stargazers continue gorgeous, and now the tiger lilies are out too. At least the ones in the garden. The ones in the wood need a few more days. We went out for a drive, and this seems to be the year of the tiger lily. They’re everywhere. Every garden over 50 years old

The Stargazers Arrive

It has been a terribly rainy week. I managed to get the lawn mowed yesterday, then it rained all night. The stargazer lilies are open, and gorgeous. Unfortunately, some of them seem quite short, even though we composted them last August. I’m hoping that compost this spring and fall will get them back on the naturalizing track. The yellow glow flower is also in bloom. We got this from Cindy Dale, and the landscapers did their best to kill it, but did not quite succeed. This is the first time it has bloomed since then, and it’s 8 feet high. What is it with yellow flowers in August?

A break in the rain

We had heavy, heavy rain most of the day today. I remain quite surprised at how well all the flowers are holding up, because the rain has been so hard that I expect to look out and see all the flower stalks lying on the ground, but so far, so good. The hollyhocks are blooming

And so starts August

We’ve had pretty heavy rains all week this week, and the flowers in bloom in the garden are really starting to show the strain of all the water weight. The Shasta daisies in particular have mostly flopped over and started to rot, turning into a most unattractive slime heap. Ick. So I went out and

A Baby Goldfish

Or so we think. It hides in the algae (which it’s eating madly) so it’s almost as hard to get a good look as a good picture. There are also half a dozen somewhat larger (two inch) charcoal grey fish in there, none of which we’d seen before today. At the rate the salmon colored

Summer Arrives

Usually, by the fourth of July, I’ve got all of my hot summer colors going strong in the garden. Despite the heat (which has been horrible), the summer colors are just now coming into their own. I used to be able to count on a burst of my ditch lilies reliably blooming right on the

Tulips and more tulips

Of course, it didn’t freeze last night. Our weather station says it went down to 37, so everything probably would have been okay even without all the covering up I did. But since there’s another frost warning tonight, it makes sense to just leave them all right where they are and covered them up just

The Flower Show

We went to the Keene Flower Show today, and enjoyed pretending that it was spring. It was pretty crowded for a Friday afternoon, but not so crowded that it wasn’t fun. We took Ginny with us, and she seemed to enjoy it as well. The only thing I bought for the garden were lily bulbs.

Almost Fall, again

It’s just the beginning of September, but fall is definitely in the air. The asters are just starting to bloom. I’d picked up two fancy ones earlier this year, and I’m quite pleased with the dark purple and dark blue colors. I’m not so sure I liked where I planted them, but I want to
