I am slowly moving my way through a couple of my flower beds, but it is really slow going after two years of neglect. It is so easy to get so overwhelmed that I just want to quit and start over. I’m trying to stay focused, trying to enjoy it rather than seeing it as

We finally attacked the bed where I want all of the new bulbs to go. I was dreading it, but it wasn’t that bad. We pulled all of the glads and dahlias, and I’m amazed at how great that soil is. This is the new bed I did this spring, with the lasagna method and

Frank still thinks I’m nuts, but I worked my tail off today putting in that new bed where the lilacs I planted aren’t going to make it. I think it is probably twenty feet long, and it entailed much digging up of sod and dirt, hauling of much crap, and generally hard, physical labor. I

I’ve been gone all week in DC, so coming home to a serious day of gardening was just what the doctor ordered, and the weather cooperated nicely. There wasn’t really much blue sky, but it was warm and it wasn’t raining, and I’ll take that after the cold and wet fall we’ve been having

The last day of October was one of the few bright clear ones we’ve had. These late fall days with nothing but oak leaves left on the trees aren’t as flashy as when the maples are burning, but the dark red-brown against the green pines is still a fine show. Lyle Handy showed up earlier

Okay, we got that one bed, the primary one for the spring flowers, put to bed for the year. It turned out to be a huge amount of work, but I’m hoping to not have to repeat it in the spring. We covered it all with a couple of inches of beautiful black compost and

It actually turned out to be quite nice today. Sure, it was windy, which makes it difficult when I am trying to rake leaves, but still, no snow except in the really shady spots like the front porch, no rain, pretty warm, and sunny. Not bad after two days of snow. We got outside pretty

Whew! It is melting, though slowly. I don’t think it got out of the 30s today, but Frank insisted we go out after work and at least start spreading compost and mulch. Mostly, I wimped out and watched him learn to use his scoop. I think he’ll get better at it, but right now it’s

Well, there’s no getting around it. It stuck. I woke up this morning hoping the snow had turned to rain overnight, and instead I saw two inches on the ground and the snow was still coming. It’s pretty, I admit, but I’m not ready. I need more fall, please. I like fall. To outline the

I think we can call the mushroom season over, so I want to sum things up for future years. On the wild mushroom front we’ve done well: we’ve learned to recognize several very good species. Puffballs, chanterelles and sweet teeth in all show promise. Unfortunately I don’t like the texture of the little puffballs as
