I worry that I will jinx it, but we may have actually gone a whole day with the pigs not getting out. Excuse me while I rejoice. We even went to town (for so much crap for the farm!), and everyone was in the right pen when we got back. Even Misty. Pigs are

There was a shipping problem with my order of plugs from the Jollies. Just because last year I’d had them delivered to where I was in exile, they shipped them there again. The poor dears spent four days in unheated warehouses before finally being delivered to me today. There was only a bit of damage,

After a year away, I get to do all of my window boxes again this year. Yay! I’m so excited. Wow. Even before the landscaping was done on the yard, I was already doing the window boxes around the deck. Pretty cool tradition to have. I like it because it gives me fiddling gardening

We finally attacked the bed where I want all of the new bulbs to go. I was dreading it, but it wasn’t that bad. We pulled all of the glads and dahlias, and I’m amazed at how great that soil is. This is the new bed I did this spring, with the lasagna method and

What did we do today? I can hardly remember. Worked on the garden shed foundation. Ran the sawmill. Until we were exhausted! Fed the bees. Frank’s switched to a 2-1 sugar/water ratio, and both hives are still taking it. Only a few of them are flying these days. Suddenly the bidens in my window

I started this year right in the front of the house. The hosta I’d gotten so cheaply from Walmart and potted up were doing so well that I wanted to get them into the ground. I think they could handle even a hard freeze if we get another one, so in they’ll go. I put

With all the boxes in, I’m now not safe at garden centers. I have so much time! I should buy more, more, more! Actually, I’ve been pretty restrained, all things considered. I found some really cheap but healthy looking stuff at Walmart, and potted them up. In particular, a red scarlet clematis is now potted

We got just a light dusting of snow, probably less than an inch. It was supposed to just rain. Surprise! We knew it would happen, and sure enough, the rain turned to snow overnight last night. Happy April. I am really done with winter, thanks. My sweet pea experiment seems to be working out okay, though. Frank tromped out there and took a couple of pictures, and the stone seems to be keeping the area just around them warm enough to not freeze the little guys. They’ve grown three inches already since I put them out just a few days ago.

My sweet peas were getting so tall that I decided they just had to go outside already, because there’s no way to keep a vining plant under lights, I think. Why did I start these so early? I’ve never grown them before, and the package said they like cool weather, so cool weather they are

Lisa spent the week in LA and took the red-eye home last night. While I was waiting for her, I scooped as much crud as I could out of the pond, and turned the pump back on. We lost all our fish for the second year in a row. We told the landscaper we wanted
