We had heavy, heavy rain most of the day today. I remain quite surprised at how well all the flowers are holding up, because the rain has been so hard that I expect to look out and see all the flower stalks lying on the ground, but so far, so good. The hollyhocks are blooming

We’ve had pretty heavy rains all week this week, and the flowers in bloom in the garden are really starting to show the strain of all the water weight. The Shasta daisies in particular have mostly flopped over and started to rot, turning into a most unattractive slime heap. Ick. So I went out and

We were out sitting in the gazebo after work last night, enjoying a glass of wine, ready to veg the night away. We were both talking about how low on energy we were. In particular, I was griping about being sore because of how hard we’d worked all weekend. We were looking out at the

The garden is definitely in transition, from our June bursts of bloom and the start of the summer colors of yellow and gold. For some reason, I seem to have a lot of white things blooming right now, not that I’m complaining. It just means I need to buy more plants! What a hardship. Madame

Of course, it didn’t freeze last night. Our weather station says it went down to 37, so everything probably would have been okay even without all the covering up I did. But since there’s another frost warning tonight, it makes sense to just leave them all right where they are and covered them up just

Because I have no will power whatsoever, I couldn’t just order annual seeds, now could I? Do I even have room for more perennials in my garden? I must. It’s huge. Surely I can find space for hundreds of more plants. Right? Right. To make matters worse, these aren’t all perennials, even. I was just

We were both out of town all week last week, and quite concerned about how the garden would do without any attention at all. It’s maintaining itself remarkably well, considering how little I’ve been home to tend to it. While it did rain last night, things are still very dry, and the poor lawn isn’t

One of the things we’ve noticed when we mow the lawn is that there are many places where the tips of rocks are sticking out and catching the lawn mower. It’s made for a very bumpy ride, and we’re sure it’s not good for the mower. So today Frank went out there with a shovel,
