We got a lot done today. Frank’s big to-do item was to turn the compost. The far right bin of the old set (right near the house) is our finished stuff, and has collapsed down to less than half a bin. It’s too late to spread that stuff now, so he was hoping that the

The heat wave continues here. It got as high as the mid-90s again, which just saps my energy and keeps me from wanting to do much outside at all. The string algae in the pond suddenly appeared today, from all of the hot weather, I guess. Frank fished most of it out with the net.

It’s so pretty today that we really can’t stay inside for long. We went outside for a bit of fiddling at lunch today, and again right after work as well. The sun is out, the air is warm, and it’s like Summer magically happened overnight. The butterflies are out in full force, too. All sorts

One of the things I got done this Saturday was planting the stuff from swapping that had come in during the week while I was out of town. I got some Monarda Purple Bea Balm in on the side of the pergola by the chives. I didn’t actually need more bea balm, but since I

It looks like the only living vertebrate in the pond at this point is Gingrich the Newt. (I think he’s the same one that moved in last summer. And what else would you call a newt anyway?) I’ve fished out 6 or 8 dead frogs by now, and most of them look crushed. We are starting to look around at websites selling pond plants, and want to get those in before we start with more fish. I can see a lot of perennials poking through the left over leaves from last fall. Poking up out there already is the lupines and some heather. The sunset tonight was spectacular.

We worked on building some more compost bins today. We’ve filled up the ones we have already, between the weeds, grass clippings and the coffee grounds we get from the coffee shop. An no, I do not want to stop getting those grounds. Our soil is so poor we need all the compost we can get. We are mixing it with shredded paper. We had to get a bigger one last weekend, because we, er, burned out the other one from too much use. This new one — much nicer. Eats cardboard boxes like cereal boxes without blinking. The lupines, water lilies and irises are all in full bloom right now. Driving up to the house, the garden just looks spectacular. Why isn’t the garden tour today?!

I’m back from my first business trip after my surgery, which was exhausting, but I at least went outside and took a ton of pictures, did a little weeding. Lots of dead-heading. We still have quite a few late summer flowers, though the trees are starting to change. The burning bushes are at peak, I

The fish are getting quite brave. We seem to have around 12-14 of them. It’s hard to count the little buggers. But they now come to the surface when we feed them, and if we just go to look at them, they think we’re going to feed them, so they all rush over to
