A break in the rain

We had heavy, heavy rain most of the day today. I remain quite surprised at how well all the flowers are holding up, because the rain has been so hard that I expect to look out and see all the flower stalks lying on the ground, but so far, so good. The hollyhocks are blooming

Lisa’s Saturday chores

One of the things I got done this Saturday was planting the stuff from swapping that had come in during the week while I was out of town. I got some Monarda Purple Bea Balm in on the side of the pergola by the chives. I didn’t actually need more bea balm, but since I

Clematis on sale

One of the species tulips is opened up today. It’s yellow and white, and so cute! These are the ones, unfortunately, that the mice at most of, though, so there aren’t that many plants. I think they are adorable, though. Maybe they’ll spread. It really barely looks like a tulip to me. The hyacinths are

Walk About

We did a walk about after work today, just to see what’s coming up. There are definite daffs and species tulips all over the place at this point. The cats all had a great time following us around, though mostly they enjoyed playing around with me on the front porch deck, dashing around the sawmill

So much snow

Every time we get more snow, or I hear more snow is coming, I have a hard time remembering that it’s good for my garden. I keep hearing it really is, though. That underneath all that snow, the ground will hardly freeze very deep, because snow is such a good insulator. But I grew up

Another ice storm

The snow and ice storm is gorgeous, but better viewed from inside than out. Um, I think it’s time to take down the fall flag! The bird feeders are starting to get attention, especially the suet, which has been largely ignored all summer and fall. We haven’t seen the wild turkey flocks yet this year. I wonder where they are? I love the way the pergola looks with the ice all over it. The pond is now frozen solid.

Early September garden

Our poor pumpkin! Still huge, and the blossoms are huge, but now we learn that they have to be hand pollinated. I doubt we are even going to get a single pumpkin from this plant. Stupid pumpkin. I wanted to take my own home grown pumpkin to the Keene Pumpkin festival this year. Chrysler Imperial

Teaching the climbers to climb

The chives right next to the pergola are in full bloom today. They’ve reseeded themselves and are very happy all over my garden, actually. Oops! Frank’s been playing with the camera, and I loved the shot of the chives with the bee so much it’s now the background wallpaper on my computer, plus I printed

More Iris

We were outside every possible minute today, trying to get things ready for the garden tour. I’m slowly feeling like I’m getting it under control, though. There are still lots of iris in bloom, with the Siberian ones just coming out. There are a bunch of these in the shallow parts of the pond’s waterfall,

High Summer

Welcome to High Summer! I was a picture-taking fool today, but I can’t help it. The garden is absolutely beautiful right now. Such a change, suddenly. There are tons of colors all over the place, and everything, it seems, is in bloom. My window boxes in particular are all very full, draping down nicely.
