Touch Wood

I worry that I will jinx it, but we may have actually gone a whole day with the pigs not getting out. Excuse me while I rejoice. We even went to town (for so much crap for the farm!), and everyone was in the right pen when we got back. Even Misty. Pigs are

Gentle Giants

Kaytla, the ewe who had triplets, one still born, looks like she is developing mastitis. I noticed that one teat was twice the size of the other, and that both lambs were nursing on the other side. I asked on the ISBONA list to make sure I should intervene, and milked her out by hand

Indoor Day

It was a windy, rainy day today. The cats and I stayed in, the sheep all stayed under cover. Even the Shetlands decided it wasn’t worth running away when I started scarily waving hay around. The weather station on top of our roof shows a peak gust of 51 mph, the fastest of the year.

Fall’s Fallen

I hate it when I travel in October, and somehow it seems to happen every year. I’ve been gone for nine days, and I missed my favorite season! Peak has come and gone while I’ve been out in California and Texas. And of course, the weather is so rainy and wet that we are constantly

Hen of the Woods

Just a very brief update to show off half of a huge hen of the woods that our friend Paul Abraham gifted us with today. Wow. Frank and I spent an hour or so cutting this up and sauteing it all so that we could freeze it. We were worried that it would take longer

More plants, and planting

We went to the grand opening of a Home Depot in Keene last night. Their nursery isn’t great, but we did get some good deals. We were a bit disappointed in how many zone six and seven plants we saw. Keene might be zone 5, but most of the hill towns around Keene are

The Stargazers Arrive

It has been a terribly rainy week. I managed to get the lawn mowed yesterday, then it rained all night. The stargazer lilies are open, and gorgeous. Unfortunately, some of them seem quite short, even though we composted them last August. I’m hoping that compost this spring and fall will get them back on the naturalizing track. The yellow glow flower is also in bloom. We got this from Cindy Dale, and the landscapers did their best to kill it, but did not quite succeed. This is the first time it has bloomed since then, and it’s 8 feet high. What is it with yellow flowers in August?

A break in the rain

We had heavy, heavy rain most of the day today. I remain quite surprised at how well all the flowers are holding up, because the rain has been so hard that I expect to look out and see all the flower stalks lying on the ground, but so far, so good. The hollyhocks are blooming

And so starts August

We’ve had pretty heavy rains all week this week, and the flowers in bloom in the garden are really starting to show the strain of all the water weight. The Shasta daisies in particular have mostly flopped over and started to rot, turning into a most unattractive slime heap. Ick. So I went out and

Lilacs and webcams

More and more rain. It’s depressing, though I’m telling myself it’s really good for the garden. We’ve turned off the irrigation for weeks now, because the ground is water-logged already, even the window boxes. The bugs are horrible, too, probably because it’s been so damp. The lilacs are blooming, even the bush near the poppies,
