Every time I see bees scattered on the snow around the hives, my heart skips a bit, even though at this point, after all these years of keeping bees, I know it means the hive is doing well. Those little dead bees outside the hive are a sign that the remaining bees are taking advantage of a bit of warm weather to do some clean up. They’ll fly out with a carcass of one of the dead bees and drop it out of the hive, then hurry back.
Several of the chickens have discovered this tasty fact and are braving the deep snow for a snack. There aren’t many bugs around when the ground is snow covered, after all, and I’m not sure there’s something that a chicken likes better than BUGS!
We’ve had bees since 2004. I just love knowing they are okay.
